DIABETES TYPE 2 AND YOU
THE 944 EMERGENCY FAT RULE
Which non-fat food is 100% fat? When does 2% fat mean 37% of the calories
are from fat. Welcome to marketing 101. Fear Fat. Fat in you diet delays
your blood sugar from entering the cells with food and energy. Insulin
carries glucose (sugar) into the cells but a fatty meal slows this process
and makes your feed tired. Sugar, sugar everywhere but very little going
into the cells. Fat keeps the cell doors closed to sugar. Your cells are
starving for sugar while they are surrounded by high sugar in the blood
vessels. You'll be reading lots about trans fats in the next year, fats
that make storbough cookies last for months but that play havoc with our
systems when our bodies try to use these fats. Fasts in general arn't
bad but saturated fat is bad. THE 944 EMERGENCY FAT RULE. Fat containes
9 calories per gram. Carbohydrates and protein each contain 4 calories
per gram. Look at the label for 2% milk. Serving size 1 cup. Calories
120, protein 8 grams, carbohydrate 11 grams, fat 5 grams. Calculate protein
calories. 8 grams times 4 calories per gram equals 32 calories. Then multiply
carbohydrate calories 11 grams times 4 calories per gram equals 44 calories.
Next multiply fat calories. Five grams times 9 calories per gram equals
45 calories. Fat calories are 5 of the 120 calories or 37% fat calories.
WHICH NON-FAT FOOD IS 100% FAT? Pam spray is 100% fat. If Pam spray is
used for 1/3 or a second it contains 5 calories of fat which is considered
non-fat. Who do you know that uses Pam spray for 1/3 or a second? Most
people use it for 3 or 4 seconds. If used for 3 or 4 seconds it is 60
calories and all the calories are fat. If you use Pam spray, get the olive
oil or canola oil since those are good fats.
The diabetes support group meets the second Monday of each month at 7
pm in our office. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge.
